Aero was introduced in the North of England in 1935 as the ‘new chocolate’ and proved so popular that sales were extended throughout the UK by the end of the same year.
Aero was originally going to be called Airways to reflect the vogue for jet travel in the 1930s when it was launched. By 1936, Aero had reached New York. It was one of the first products promoted by Rowntree primarily on the strength of the brand, rather than the company name.

As the building had very low ceilings, it could accomodate only paintings which were wide but not too high. In the art world, such paintings became known as 'kitkats'.
